Alison Farnhill is a qualified, experienced English teacher who has taught and supported children of all ages and abilities during a career spanning thirty years. She has a B.A. Hons. Humanities degree and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, specialising in English. Alison keeps up to date with the latest developments in education and is trained in teaching the new AQA GCSE English Language and Literature syllabuses to ensure relevant lesson content.
Alison has nine years’ experience teaching GCSE English Language and Literature at secondary schools including Millthorpe, Burnholme, Boroughbridge and Malton. While at Boroughbridge High School she served as an inter-school assessor for GCSE. She also taught English Literature and Theatre Studies A Level courses, Drama and Study Skills. Alison took classes covering the full ability range including those for children with Special Needs.
Alison has also enjoyed teaching and supporting children throughout the primary age range at several schools in York. At St. Lawrence’s she was rated ‘Outstanding’ in a Church Schools Inspection for a Year 5 lesson. She also prepared Year 6 classes for Literacy SATs at Poppleton Road. More recently Alison supported Gifted and Talented children at Carr Infant where she was considered ‘Outstanding’ for work in Guided Reading. Alison has worked with children who have special educational and physical needs to deliver Individual Education Plans.
Alison has tutored English pupils of all ages including adults. She particularly enjoys seeing the progress in skills, confidence and knowledge that one-to-one tuition can deliver. Sessions are tailored to meet the individual needs of the pupil and encouragement is the key. Alison can help with reading, writing, spelling, phonics and SATs practice for primary children. Lessons for teenagers may include grammar, comprehension, essay writing, analysis of fiction and non-fiction texts and preparing for GCSE. Tuition for adults can boost confidence in all aspects of literacy whether for work, further education or pleasure.
